Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises is accepting applications for Education and Research Interns for the 2024 whale watch season. Based in Barnstable, Massachusetts, we cruise into the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary daily to view whales, seals, seabirds, and other wildlife while enjoying views of the beautiful coastlines along Cape Cod Bay. The internship is designed for college students and recent graduates, however all who are interested in making the most of this opportunity are welcome to apply. Applicants do not need to major in biology or a related field; instead, we are looking for individuals who have a passion for serving as stewards of ocean conservation.

Education and Research Interns have a dynamic role at Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises. In a typical week, two days will be spent acting as a second naturalist, working closely with the lead naturalist to engage with passengers to carry out our education program’s goals. Biofacts, maps, and hands-on activities are used to present educational mini-lessons on the ride to and from the feeding grounds. On these days, the intern is also responsible for collecting sightings data under the supervision of the lead naturalist, documenting the number of animals observed and assisting in identifying individual animals by the unique pigmentation of their fluke markings.

On galley deckhand days, the intern will work primarily in the vessel’s snack bar under the direction of the galley supervisor. Galley crew stock, prepare, and serve food and drink. They also assist passengers and help ensure safety both during boarding operations and while underway. Both roles assist in daily cleaning and maintenance. With a small and cohesive crew, the various roles often overlap, and the intern will have ample opportunity to communicate with naturalists and fellow interns regardless of their responsibilities each day.

Interns will also be expected to submit data electronically, participate in regular meetings and professional development opportunities, and are encouraged to complete an independent study project under the supervision of the Director of Marine Conservation and Education.

Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises began operating whale watch trips out of Barnstable harbor in 1980, when New England whale watching was in its infancy. We take great pride not only in our boat and crew, but also in maintaining the highest level of service for our valued customers. Our professional naturalists are experts in their field and have many years of experience in sharing the marine environment with visitors. Throughout the trip, they provide engaging, entertaining, and educational narrative. They enjoy visiting with passengers to answer questions and share the excitement of whale watching.

The Whale Watcher is a member of WhaleSENSE, a voluntary education and recognition program offered to commercial whale watching companies in the Northeast U.S. This program recognizes companies committed to responsible whale watching practices and ocean stewardship.

Whale watch passengers are an extremely diverse group of people ranging from families with infants and children to professional photographers and members of the scientific community. Our goal of educating the public and fostering a strong appreciation and respect for whales and the ocean environment is achieved through positive interactions using a multitude of educational approaches while offering the best whale possible sightings within our control.
